Thu 28 Apr, 2022 10:16 am

Hello there,

Would anyone be interested in a full traverse of The Western Arthurs between the 20th of November and the 5th of December weather permitting. It would follow the following Itinerary:

Day 1- Scotts Peak to Lake Oberon
Day 2- Lake Oberon to Haven Lake
Day 3- Haven Lake to Lake Rosanne or The Cracroft depending on how we feel
Day 4- Lake Rosanne to Scotts Peak.

Send a message of interested.

Western Arthurs is currently closed beyond West Portal. You can't go down via Rosanne, you can't go to Cracroft Crossing. If you go as far as West Portal, you have to return and descend via Kappa Moraine. Phytophthora cinnamoni is spreading through the Eastern Arthurs, Cracroft and into the Westrn Arthurs. Until remediation works are completed, everything between Hanging Lake and West Portal is closed to prevent the situation worsening.
Yeah, it might be open by summer, but I wouldn't bet on it. This is too delicate and important an area for TasPAWS to take chances with.

Yeah I didn't know about that. Hopefully it will be open then otherwise I will just shorten it and go down via kappa moraine

That is a very unfun itinerary.

True. I'd take the four days - out via Kappa Moraine - and slow down a little to smell the Boronia citriodora. But some people like to push it a bit more.

Yeah Day 2 from Oberon to Haven Lake would be a huge day of scrambling with a full pack even if the weather is favourable. I would be making sure you had at least a spare day up your sleeve in case the weather is no good.
