iOS Beta Testers wanted for Bit Map 7 (maps, nav., GIS)

Postby Son of a Beach » Mon 21 Jun, 2021 11:21 am

Bit Map v7 is a complete rewrite from scratch, and it is due for release soon, but it needs some more testing. I only have 3 testers (plus myself) at present and that's not enough to give it a thorough work out.

If you would be interested in doing some beta testing, install the 'Test Flight' app (click here) on your iOS device, then on that same device click on this link: https://testflight.apple.com/join/peTsPmqH

What is Bit Map?
Bit Map is a mapping, navigation, GIS, etc, app, but what has always made it stand out from the crowd of other mapping and navigation apps is the ability to load up your choice of maps. Ie, you are not restricted to a set of maps dictated by the app vendor, and you don't have to jump through hoops if you want to get other maps installed in the app. You can have many such maps loaded simultaneously, and switch between them (or even view them overlaid on the same map). This applies to online map services (inc, WMTS, TMS, XYZ, OS) as well as to offline map image files (JPEG, PNG, GeoTIFF). You can even take a photo of a paper map and georeference it within the app (using one of four different georeferencing methods). You can download these online services to offline maps to take out bush and use when the network is not available.

If you think this might be of interest to you, then please sign up using the link above.

What Online Map Services Do You Use?

The other thing about Bit Map, is that although it comes with an OpenStreetMap map service built in, it is really designed for people who want to configure other map services instead of (or as well as) OSM. I'd like to start compiling a list of such map services that may be of use to users, but my own uses are limited to Tasmania. I've started putting the list together here:

https://nixanz.com/bitmap/resources/map-services/

Which online map services (WMTS, TMS, XYZ, OSM-compatible) do you use? Let me know if you think they could be added to the above-linked list.

If Tom Brennan is listening maybe he could give me a step-through on adding NSW topo maps to this. Victoria would be handy too.

Just found a whole bunch of NSW services. I have now added a few of them to the Bit Map 'Resources' web page and listed those ones here:

XYZ Services:

Code: Select all
Imagery:
https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/arcgis/rest/services/public/NSW_Imagery/MapServer/tile/{z}/{y}/{x}
Base Map:
https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/arcgis/rest/services/public/NSW_Base_Map/MapServer/tile/{z}/{y}/{x}
Topo Map:
https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/arcgis/rest/services/public/NSW_Topo_Map/MapServer/tile/{z}/{y}/{x}

WMTS services:

Code: Select all
Imagery:
https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/arcgis/rest/services/public/NSW_Imagery/MapServer/WMTS
Base Map:
https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/arcgis/rest/services/public/NSW_Base_Map/MapServer/WMTS
Topo Map:
https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/arcgis/rest/services/public/NSW_Topo_Map/MapServer/WMTS

Tested XYZ imagery and the Topo WMTS in Bit Map. Both worked fine. See screenshot below with both layers turned on (as well as OSM as the base layer).

(Please ignore the scale line and attributions being too high up. And the location marker being too large. I'm currently experimenting with rendering scales, which makes some items placed and sized incorrectly.)

PS. I can't find freely available equivalents for Victoria

I did find this "technical information" page, which says that they're equivalent WMTS services (branded "VicMaps Basemaps") are "a licensed product" and further details on this license page. This implies that they do not publish the URLs nor make the services available for free/public use, which is a shame.

Many governments these days are making a wide variety of spatial data and services available to the public for free. Is this not the case for Victoria?

Thanks for adding NSW - very nice. I didn't really expect to get Victoria (you have to pay for it in GaiaGPS).

Quick question - can I edit or delete a waypoint that I have added?

You can delete a waypoint, and you can edit its attributes (eg, title, comments) but you cannot move its location. I do hope to add more spatial editing capabilities one day, but that's likely some way off.

The instructions for data management (including editing/deleting waypoints) are the last major section missing from the User Manual. But in brief:
- Go to the Layers Library (second item on the top toolbar)
- Tap on the 'Tracks' data source (in the local offline data stores section)
- Tap on the 'Waypoints' layer
- Swipe a waypoint left to delete it
- Tap a waypoint to view/edit its attributes

Or you can swipe left on the 'Tracks' data store to quickly delete that entire database (including all tracks and all waypoints). Won't let you delete it if you're currently tracking, of course. It should automatically re-create a 'Tracks' database next time you start recording a track or take a waypoint.

You cannot currently delete a waypoint directly from the map view.

Just posted an updated build of Bit Map which incorporates the following requested options:

- Choose units for display of distances, speeds, altitudes (and choose format of geodetic coordinates)
- Display MGRS grid references
- Display distance/bearing to last waypoint (and/or between last two waypoints)

I think I'm getting close to submitting to the app store. But I'd still be keen to have a few more people test it out first.

If you want to do some beta testing, just install the 'Test Flight' app (click here) on your iOS device, then on that same device click on this link: https://testflight.apple.com/join/peTsPmqH
