Rookie, whats the worst that can happen. ;)

A forum for discussing the Australian Alps Walking Track. This is a 655 km long track from Walhalla (Vic) to Tharwa (ACT)

Good luck

At least he didn't give up on Fingerboard Spur like a previous English gent.

Go Wade

Hi Guys,

Is anyone else following Wade's progress on his spot page? I'm getting a little concerned about his progress (or lack there of). Anyone else got any thoughts on this, or has someone actually been in contact with him?

Once he leaves the Baw Baw Plateau the degree of difficulty ramps up substantially.

It is unusually slow.

But Not knowing his plans it's hard to say.

Maybe he is taking his time and filming the surroundings The lady who dropped him off , indicated on his Facebook page that he was filming the adventure. His 2 night stay at O'Sheas seemed odd though! Lets see what tomorrow brings.

Hi everyone, rest day at O'Shea's with fresh food around the fire.
And yes I'm filming this, it will take me longer but I have food for 50 days and nowhere else to be.

Met Wade near the Mt Erica carpark on Tuesday 16/1.
He had a rest day at O'Shea's on day 2 and other than discovering the rude shock of carrying a 30kg pack up the 750m climb to the carpark he was doing fine. He seemed to have research his needs quite well and hence why his gear is so heavy (experience at least teaches you what you don't need), well plus a lot of camera gear. Yes, he is filming which uses up quite a bit of time and he certainly isn't in a hurry. Past him again (on my way back from Whitelaws Hut site) on Wednesday and he was powering along and aiming for Whitelaws that night. Love the youthful enthusiasm, strength and stamina and added to his bushwalking naivety I think he will be fine, unless he gets lost!
Good luck Wade looking forward to the video!

Just checked his progress- had a slight locational discombobulation 2 hrs ago, but is now tearing down the Trig Pt track heading for the Thompson river camp site.

Take No Prisoners Wade!

It appears Wade zigged when he should have zagged on Upper Thomson Rd and ended up in a freshly logged area. Nice recovery though back onto Trig Point Track.

Looks like he zigged instead of zagging again today on the Thomson Jordan Divide Track and again ended up in a logging coupe (I found that intersection a little vague too) for a couple of hours.

I was watching his progress at work today, it's a funny feeling when you see someone going wrong but have no way of telling him, I was yelling at my screen but surprisingly that didn't help (it made me feel a little better though :D )

Tomorrow's issue will be where he has to leave an old benched walking track and head up the crest of Victor Spur, it's hard to leave a reasonable track to start a speculative scrub bash sometimes. He should be OK though Victor Spur Firetrack isn't far away. It'll be a solid day for him though.

The Victor Spur! It's got a couple of tracks heading left sorta parallel with the road...don't go that way. If you stay center up the spur you'll eventually rejoin the track.

Too right. We started to veer off the Victor ridge as it seemed an easier way. Realised the mistake and a bit of off-track to rejoin the ridge line. The AAWT was there waiting for us.

Hi Guys,

Wade's going a fair way off-piste down at Black River. At the moment he is a fair way off the AAWT and heading away from it. It's pretty rough down there.....

Hmm, I agree, Kev, a very weird slow motion spectator sport (?) and I think Wade is wandering South West now when he should be following the Black River North to the crossing at the bottom of the spur. My recollection from pre fire was the bush was pretty thick so I hope he's on a track. Hang on, he appears to have stopped heading SW so hopefully he is regrouping and heading back towards the track. Certainly brings back memories of my first stage on the AAWT, stumbling in Black River at dusk with a pack that was way too heavy.

Yeah, he's a bit bushed again at the moment. I think he's followed a tributary away from Black River. It's frustrating seeing him go wrong and not being able to tell him :?

He might have thought the tributary was the Black River and after crossing headed up stream.
He recovered fairly well from previous excursions he'll most likely recover from this one.
Might be lunch time too and he's found a nice possie for a break.

Yeah, I think that's exactly what he's done Neil. You actually have to cross over the tributary on a log before you arrive at Black River, it sounds clear enough from here but in the valley surrounded by scrub and regrowth it's not so clear.

Wade's going OK though. Like you said he seems to be able to gather everything up and get on course again, which is good.

Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. I think Wade should ask for a sponsorship. I can see me buying one in the near future, my wife would definitely be happy if I had one.

He may be getting hungry by now. He told me he had 8 days' food until his first FD at Rumpffs; I make it 10 days now! He needs to stop zig zagging and put in a few kms. In fairness, being new to hiking, navigation and doing the miles (with a 30kg pack) were likely to be his weak points!

I used a SPOT tracker when I did Walhalla to Hotham. Wife and family love being able to follow from home but if you go off track it can cause some concern. I missed a turn and had to backtrack which caused my sister to ring my wife asking was I ok. Luckily I'd found some mobile signal to tell my wife all was good. At least the family know where I am and assume I'm ok if I'm moving.

Can now see how frustrating it would be watching from afar - at least he looks like he is back at the river

Maybe that's what he was up to yesterday. Detour to pick up more food. Although he had a few good rests along the way, he was still walking at 11pm last night! so it looks like he's in the zone now.
