Tent mesh inner, noseeum tear repair

Postby Neo » Thu 18 Jul, 2019 6:19 pm

So it went like this:

In the night busting for the loo, couldn't find headtorch, couldnt understand why the door zipper was stuck, forced it.
Turns out i didn't have the zipper tag, but the tieback toggle and loop. Resulting in two tears to the mesh inner, a neat 90°.

Here is a photo. Held together woth duct tape either side and also a strip of velcro.

My question is, what is the best repair method for mesh?
Thinking a mesh or nylon tape up to 2cm wide, hand or machine stitch the tear together.

I'd think seriously at having it done professionally. Someone (Moondog?) will know the place in/near Werribee in Victoria for example. If it's as big as it looks small repair jobs might just make it worse. Uneven stresses and drags perhaps. Surely it shouldn't cost too much. Definitely worth looking at and at least get a price or if that fails find a sewing professional and supply the mesh. Not hard to buy that stuff.

Finding the torch is a problem.

My older black diamond had a flashing led that I could find in the dark Green battery was good, red battery was on the way out.
The new one doing does not do that.. so the choices are;

hang it from the very top - upward should be easy and the fabric should guide me to the peak

put it under my pillow .. has the advantage I can do the same in a motel so I can find my torch in any strange place.

Any other ideas?

PS Commiserations on the tear of the mesh . Careful matching between the sides and than a zig zag stitch to the noseeum 2 cm ribbon you envisage should be ok.

My only plan is to go for a sewing pro!

A seamstress or a local backpack maker.

A simple reinforced bach n fourth stitch :○]

Edit, oh its rare i can't lay my hands on my bits in the dark, torch i mean.

The repair place near Melbourne is http://remoterepairs.com.au/
They have been around for years- and I think have a good reputation

Yup. Now have sticky residue, new tape not holding. Will be a pro repair job when I can organise it.
No reply from the Sydney mob so will look up the Victorian one.
Due to being my home and on the road. Switching tents this week and just gave the tarp a go, fine for no-tic no-leech locations!

Can I suggest my standard where I replace all zip tags with glow in the dark cord. I found some on eBay some years ago.

There are some instructions and photos here, which make the job look as if it can be done on a domestic sewing machine:

Good idea Mark, my exped packs have a glow pull on every zip so could pinch some for tent zippers.
Cheers ribuck, have seen that article. If I can clean the adhesive residue then was thinking a mesh type hem tape and zig zag stitching would be good.

Eucalyptus oil to clean glue residue off, and maybe some hot cut mesh for a repair, so it doesn’t need to be folded over to hide the raw edge.....or have a look at some of the gauzy ribbons on the roll at Spotlight etc.

Update, problem solved.

Had some fine noseeum mesh and cut a strip. Mum figured to stitch the tear together then we overlaid the extra mesh.

It is a Big Sky revolution 2p. With the full mesh inner. Great tent for
most of the year.

I should add that eucalyptus oil did work well to get most of the old tape residue off. Cheers.

I didn't realise it was your BS that got done. Damn. Enjoyed mine while I had it.
Well worth saving though and looks a good strong repair!
