Bushwalking trivia questions

Postby davidmorr » Thu 23 Apr, 2020 1:32 pm

My club is trying to maintain interest during the lockdown by having activities in our Facebook group. So we have things like trying to guess where a picture was taken and often incidental facts. We have also been having happy hour by Zoom every Saturday night, at a notional car camp somewhere exotic. Over Easter we are supposed to be at Newnes, so we had a "virtual car camp" at Newnes.

I want to make up a trivia quiz so am looking for some good general questions that are not region specific. Answers can be words or multiple choice.

Some samples are:

What is bushwalking called in New Zealand? (Tramping - bonus points for pronouncing is correctly!)

Name three Australian brands of bushwalking gear.

How many people a year go bushwalking in Australia? (<10,000, 10,000-100,000, >100,000)

How long to you need to boil water to make it safe to drink?

Which diseases can you catch from a mosquito bite?

What are the symptoms of hypothermia?

Do you walk faster easterly than westerly?

Oh, sorry, couldn't resist. Back on topic:

Where does the AAWT start and end (either direction)?

What is Australia's second longest river?

What is Australia's second highest mountain?

To convert a magnetic bearing (from a compass) to a grid bearing (map) do you add or subtract magnetic variation?

Trick question. Answer ranges from "you don't need to boil it, just heat it to xx degrees" to " Until it all evaporates" (for heavy metals etc) depending on the type of contamination.

That's a bit region-specific. We usually walk east with a westerly tail wind, or west with headwind in Tassie. Makes a big difference!

Questions about clouds, constellations, finding north/south without a compass/device in the daytime and at night, something about frost hollows, expected temperature changes/100m change in elevation, tides, what factors increase risk of condensation in your tent, treatment of snake bite, survival stuff, e.g. how to get water if none apparent...
