The Terraces, Mt Eliot

Postby bauplenut » Tue 01 Aug, 2017 12:02 pm

Friday morning at work, what am I doing here ? On impulse, book a camp permit online for Mt Eliot area , early knock off at midday. Quick pack at home, and head off for an overnight photography trip to the Terraces. 1 hr 20 minutes from car park to base of the Terraces (one hr on track, 20 minutes no track bushwalk). Climb up the first waterfall rockface, then another, ten minutes later on second platform to make camp at 4 pm. Roam around the Terraces and twin falls area taking photos. As night comes, quarter moon setting, stars shining, take some milky way photos. A meteor zooms overhead, burning orange at the end. The moonlight lights up part of the creek – would be good with bigger moon. A pleasant night, bit chilly with constant breeze coming off the cascades. Had a large block of chocolate, which I just had to consume all by myself ! Up early Saturday for dawn, nice sky, mix of orange and dark blue, but no cloud so boring for a photo – plus too low down at this spot to get good view of horizon. Once sunlight is on the creek, run around getting early morning light photos. Light gets harsh and high contrast quick. At 9:40 am, decide it is time to go home (club bushwalk next day in an adjacent creek, save energy for that), nice stroll back to the car. Next time might camp further up the creek at 'high wall', for good view of the night sky and sunrise over the coastal plain, and photograph the other waterfalls above the Terraces !

Eastern side of Mt Eliot, Mt Eliot Section of Bowling Green Bay National Park. Tributary of St Margaret’s Creek. Access through Mountain View Lake Eco Caravan Park, Cromarty, about 40km south of Townsville.

very nice shots!
And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended,
And at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars.

That is tops Bauplenut.

I used to love the quick late trips for an overnight in the bush (stopped after kids :)).

What is the arrangement with access through the Caravan Park there?
