Bogong Village, Fainter, Cope, Nelse, Spion Kopje Circuit

Postby bigkev » Thu 09 May, 2019 8:41 pm

I headed up to the Bogong High Plains over Easter and walked a 4 day circuit starting and finishing at Bogong Village. It turned out to be a great 4 days walking with almost perfect weather. My camps were near Little Plain on night 1, Cope Creek on night 2 and Spion Kopje on night 3. Navigation was all pretty straightforward - well once I got out of Bogong Village anyway! It was the first time I've walked the Spion Kopje Track and I found it a nice walk, the views down to Falls Creek on my last night were something a bit different on a bushwalk.

I walked just under 80 kilometres and climbed around 2600 over the 4 days so it was a solid enough stroll.

If anyone wants to see some photos I've written each day up on my blog, here's the links :-

Thanks for your photos and report. I have hiked all of that terrain and know it well. We went under the gate at the start of the hike up to Bogong Jack Saddle. The Hut is there but it has seen better days.

It's some years since I headed up from Bogong Village to Bogong Jack's saddle (maybe 6-7 years) but I recall finding a sign posted foot track directly across the road from the entrance to Bogong Village. We headed up that way and ended up skirting the fenced area on a track. Not sure if that track is still obvious.

The gate certainly added a little bit of confusion to the start of the walk. So there is still a hut up there, I'll have to check it out next time I'm up there.

Hi Sunshine, you could be right. I got out onto the High Plains Road a little bit up towards Falls Creek as I remembered that the fire track headed off from up there somewhere (its been probably 20 years since I walked up this way). Maybe there is a track opposite the Bogong Village entrance?

Thanks for checking out the post.

Give the Grey Hills a go in November , Big Kev. It is worth doing.

Yeah, Grey Hills looks really interesting, it's definitely on the (ever expanding) must do list now.

Hi Big Kev, yes sunshine is correct if you cross the road at the entrance to Bogong village there is a track that goes to the left there used to be a sign there I have been up there a couple of times in recent years, I went past the other week but couldn’t see the sign!
