Southern Ranges + Du Cane Range

Postby Araucaria » Wed 17 Jul, 2019 4:10 pm

In March this year, my partner and I bought plane tickets to Hobart, planning to hike the Arthurs. We soon realized that the trail was closed due to fire damage, so, with two weeks to spend, we started looking for other hiking options. We were lucky to receive plenty of suggestions on this forum, for which we are very grateful. We decided to hike the Southern Ranges and then spend a couple of days in the Du Cane Range. We teamed up with Lesley who was looking for hiking companions here - we hiked both trails together.

We won't easily forget the bushes in the Southern Ranges... but we had a fantastic time and greatly enjoyed the views. What a magnificent mountain the PB is!! The Du Cane Range was also splendid and we wish we had more time to spend in that area.

Here are some pictures from our trip:

Nice shots of Kameruka.
Looks like you lost the pad going up PB?

Lovely pics. 2 of the best ranges Tassie has to offer there!! Love the shot of the "southern ranges bruised leg syndrome" that seems to inflict everyone on that walk..... hehehe
Nothing to see here.

What do you mean by the pad? My rain pants were getting torn to pieces, so before going up PB I cut them at knee length to avoid tripping over them and/or leaving some pieces of material behind. Well, it was the last trip for those pants I'm afraid :lol:

Either;

path - very narrow. Maybe formed by animals continually using it and thus discouraging plant growth.

insulating sheet - typically Closed Cell Foam (CCF).

Given the context, it is the first one.

Oh, ok, thanks. I don’t think we lost the path on the way up; we were following a gpx trail we got from rockmonkey, plus there were rock piles showing the path all the way up. It was steep at times but easily doable. We did get lost somewhere in the forest on the way down, however, but managed to find the path in less than an hour.
