Mt Greville - North Gorge

Postby gbagua » Mon 24 Dec, 2018 6:39 am

We had trouble yesterday accessing the gorge from the very top after leaving the summit of the mountain following an ascent via Palm Gorge. So where is the entry point to the Gorge? Going up and down the ridge (with the Gorge on the right hand side when facing Moogerah dam) trying to access it but a near vertical drop-off alongside that we were unable to down climb. There must be a hidden ledge with a short and exposed scramble somewhere along the ridge.

Can anyone pinpoint me the exact location?

Thanks!

The bible does refer to them as the southern and northern gorges but i always have known them as Palm gorge and Waterfall gorge. Neither of them are on the northern side of the mountain. The northern gorge, I first approached as an ascent and that allowed me the opportunity to locate the top out better.
It sounds to me like you're descending from the very top of the mountain.

Yes we did and we couldn't locate the entry point (one person in our group was a whinger, so this put me off a lot). Next time I'll go with competent people. I thought that too (about ascending first) but I was following a Wikiloc file, which obviously was done by ascending the Gorge first. So next time as per your comment I'll ascend the northern Gorge. Now I have to get the monkey off my back with Greville!

If i recall correctly an attempt to leave from the very top will force you down to the same shelf or elevation as the top of Palm (south) gorge. It is unnecessary and difficult. I think i did this decades ago and it wasn't fun. As per Bushpeople's guide the top of the northern gorge is at 513941. This is around to the north from the top of Palm gorge, keeping the same elevation. Doing a circuit up Waterfall gorge and down Palm gorge completely cuts out the summit ridge.

Just realised that I did the circuit the other way round, no wonder we had trouble finding the entry down the gorge. :(

Waterfall Gorge up then exit and North Gorge up! Finish with a descent of Palm Gorge.

Second attempt incoming.

Trust me, if you are there the very first time it isn't that easy to find the way down especially when someone in the group is constantly nagging. Another hike I need finish. Hopefully next month.
