Weather this weekend

Postby kitty » Wed 07 Aug, 2019 5:59 pm

The weather looks interesting for the alpine regions this weekend.
What would it be like up on Mount Bogong for example?

Got a friend up there right now so will let you know when he calls in. Thinking about heading up myself but after this current system passes on Sunday or Monday. BOM have issued backcountry warnings for the next couple of days. The worst will be today and tomorrow with wind up to 150kph.

Very cold and windy. We did Bogong around this time last year, and in similar conditions. Went up Eskdale spur and camped near the hut, not a good nights sleep with the wind.

Hi, haven't been up Bogong at this time of year, a couple of questions (please):
-I assume I need to carry chains to drive into Mountain Creek Camping Area?
-I don't plan on taking snowshoes, whats the above snowline walking like?
-planning on going in the next 3-4 weeks, appreciate any thoughts/advice.

Thanks!

I can't see anyone needing to carry or use chains to get to Mountain Creek camp area at any time of the year. Sometimes in winter you may need them to get to Eskdale spur but this time of year you should be fine. Above the snow line will be melting over the next month but there will still be snow on the mountain. Enough snow for you to warrant snowshoes at times. Early morning it will most likely be very icy so you could need some traction on your boots. Mircospikes may be worthwhile but snowshoes with a metal crampon type toe would do the job. As the top crust softens in the sun and warmer day, you will find yourself sinking into the snow. Waterproof boots and gaters will help if you intend to post hole it. Bogong still has a nice solid base so you may not sink too far down every step but expect areas around vegetation to be a bit softer. North facing areas will be melting quicker so your approach will be mostly bare of snow to 1500m, maybe 1600m. Hard to say. Have fun. Be safe. Think about taking snowshoes.

I was up Bogong on the weekend and it was very slick early in the morning, so much so I came home and promptly purchased an ice axe as I felt I was underequipped for the conditions. I would advise you take snow shoes at a minimum, +/- crampons if you have them.

Awfully pretty up there though. Stay safe :)
