Bogong High Plains and Mt. Bogong Closures 6-17/5/19

Postby Xplora » Thu 04 Apr, 2019 5:09 am

For information - almost the entire BHP and Mt. Bogong will close for 3 or 4 days between 6 and 17 May for aerial culling of deer. The dates have not been fixed as they are weather dependent. Pretty much the entire walking area will be off limits at some time during this period but roads will still be open.

Thank you. Those dates fit in with my plans for May very well, which is a happy coincidence :D

It would be so easy to get rid of the neddies at the same time, but that looks like being only a dream for now.

They should have a crack at the feral horses at the same time.

"Only deer will be targeted"......states the PV text. It seems that PV (and the government) have different standards even for ferals......apparently it's quite OK to shoot deer from an aerial platform and stress the animals, the inevitable wounding, orphaned juveniles left to starve to death etc is part of the operation.....but when feral horse numbers are to be reduced then aerial shooting of them is not permitted on the very same grounds. Clearly shooting horses is not politically acceptable if you want to stay in government.....PV and the government need to "bite the bullet" with the feral horses and just use the most effective method available and clearly that is these NSW Parks helicopter gunships that have recently been shooting many 1000's of fallow and red deer in various areas of NSW.

Clearly the current feral horse trapping programs are a total expensive failure in regards to getting the numbers down.....time to get real and get the job done properly and handle the political fall-out later. If it's OK on animal welfare grounds to shoot deer from a helicopter than logically it is OK to do it to feral horses as well.......4 days aerial shooting on the BHP and surrounds should pretty-well sort most of them out I would think as they'd be far easier to shoot from a chopper than sambar deer.

It was interesting to note that after the 1st ANP aerial cull in October 2018 when Parks were asked by the key hunting organizations for a "cost per deer" figure on the cull Parks declined to give it despite indicating pre-cull that this would be provided. So much for full disclosure and transparency for all this which after-all is being totally funded by the Vic taxpayer either directly or via PV's budget. All we can read from this is that the cost per deer for the October cull where 120 animals were taken was far higher than the $120 per animal touted in the press......probably more like $1200 per animal when all costs were added in and not just how much it cost to keep the machine in the air per hour. No-doubt we'll get the same smoke and mirror treatment after the May cull. Cheers

At present there is a Federal court injunction on Horse management regarding BHP but the new mobs around Nelse are exempt. Shooting horses is the preferred method for PV but it was a decision made at higher levels. Blame those elected.

And there-in lies the problem.....the PV staffers at local level know what needs to be done and the best methods to achieve that but it's the boffins further up the administrative food chain who are more worried about their job security who are the problem. And of course the politicians at the top of the dung pile are making decisions to keep themselves where they are rather than making the right albeit controversial decisions that should be made to address the issue. Deer......kill 'em all by any means possible......but feral horses....softly softly is the go here in case shooting them gets us into political hot water ! Cheers

Shooting all Feral critters, closing all coal powered electricity stations , delivering better comprehensive urban public transport now , introducing season passes for Nat Parks in VIC.. …...Alas it is all the stuff of fairy tales and dreams.

With you on this. It will happen but for now we wait. The same people who say shooting horses from helicopters is inhumane have not raised a voice to stop this from happening to deer. Horse management is very emotive.

I was planning a white season supply drop on the BHP during that period. I think I may have to postpone it until after 17th of May.

Parks Vic seem to be sending out mixed messages about the extent of the closure of the area on the ANP to be aerial culled starting tomorrow : May 6.

In Xplora's link in the post above this states that the closure is for the entire May 5 - 18 period to allow a 3-4 day weather window to allow the aerial cull to occur within those dates and then I have read elsewhere PV stating that although the actual 3-4 days could happen anytime within the May 5-18 window the Park will be closed for just those 3 - 4 days and laced signage will indicate what those dates are. Can't see this happening really on a number of fronts......too hard to sign all entry points into the Park at short notice and they may be visitors in those areas assuming that they are still open or people lob-up to go on a walk somewhere and are confronted by newly placed signage indicating the area is now closed for the cull.

The May 5-18 total closure is the one that is likely correct.......pity that there is conflicting PV information indicating that the closures will just be in force for the actual 3-4 days that the helicopters will the flying culling sambar deer. Best to play it safe I think and give that area a miss until after the 18th. Cheers

OK.....found the conflicting Parks Vic advice on the aerial cull closures : this from the link in Xplorers opening post :

"The trial will take place over 3 – 4 week days between 6th and 17th May 2019. The exact dates will depend
on the weather. An email confirming the dates will be sent out once a final decision has been made.
The areas of the park subject to shooting will be closed for the 3 – 4 days when shooting occurs."

Then from the ParkWeb link in Xplorers last post above mine....this :

"Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing will be closed between 5 and 18 May due to the aerial deer control trial at Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing.
The areas of the Alpine National Park around the Bogong High Plains, Mt Feathertop and Mt Bogong will be closed for the aerial deer control trial between 6 and 17 May. Please note that there will be no aerial operation on the weekend meaning the park will be open to visitors during weekend hours. The Bogong High Plains Road, Great Alpine Road, Wallaces Hut and Mountain Creek Camping Area will remain open for visitors. at Alpine National Park".

So PV have give two conflicting lots of information here.....firstly that the cull areas will be closed just for the 3-4 days of the actual cull......then......that the entire cull area will be closed from May 5 -18 to allow a 3-4 day weather-suitable window for the cull to be conducted.

Personally I'd adhere to the second lot of information.....the Park is closed from May 5-18 for the cull and no public access is permitted into that entire are as indicated on the map in Xplorers 1st post. Cheers

Sorry, had to do this in a hurry and did not fully check the web page. Closure from Monday to Friday of next week, but may still be weather dependent. Could include the following week. All approaches to Bogong High Plains and Mt. Bogong plus Feathertop. Includes up to the resort boundaries. Can't upload the map but essentially don't bother going there.

Weather stop on the shoot. Recommencing Wed 15th to Friday 17th inclusive. Park is open until then.
