Overnight Trek for the weekend around ACT

Postby dantheman » Mon 17 Feb, 2020 9:28 am

Hi Guys, I want to treat my missus for a birthday hike (shes practically begging) to go on an overnight hike. We only have Friday, Sat and Sunday. Was wondering if there are any nice 2-3 day walks close to the ACT? I'm also worried about the National Park closures around ACT at the moment.

Hey Dan, Namadgi is still closed because of the fires but Kosciuszko NP south of Mt Jagungal is open and looking nice after all the rain. It’s only 2.5 to 3 hours drive from the centre of Canberra.

To really wow your partner, I suggest you do the Main Range loop with side trips to Blue Lake and Mt Townsend. Start mid afternoon on Friday and camp up near Mt Stillwell. It’s an easy 30 minute walk from Charlotte pass. On Saturday morning head back toward Charlotte pass and walk the Main Range track counter clockwise. As mentioned above see Blue lake and Mt Townsend and make camp in Wilkinsons creek valley. Get up early on Sunday and climb Mt Kosciuszko for sunrise. Head back to Charlotte pass to finish. 2 nights, nice and simple, easy to follow track. Lots of water about. Stunning views.

If you want something a bit more adventurous and off track let me know.

Hi Stef,

Thanks for your reply. I'll look into what you suggested. What are the chances of being stuck in snow at this time of year?

Pretty low but it can happen, I have had snow every month of the year up there.

In saying that, I think this weekend is going to be lovely. 15c-ish during the day and close to 0c overnight.

Afternoon thunderstorms are an issue this time of the year. Keep an eye on the weather here - http://www.bom.gov.au/places/nsw/thredb ... /detailed/

Hi Stef, I'm worried that the following track may be too easy for us, what is your more off-trail alternative?

Easy, yes. Stunning though.

Another option could be Starting at Guthega Dam then following the Illawong track over the Snowy. Up to Mt Twynam via the little Twynam spur. Climb Twynam from the saddle and head over toward Mt Tate. Camp down near Consett Stephens pass and com down Guthega spur/trig the next day. Just as beautiful and a bit more challenging.

Thank you Stef,

We did the main range track, summiting mt Townsend and Kosciusko, sleeping at Wilkinsons creek. Amazing weekend getaway and honestly so simple. Beautiful weekend thank you! :D
