Gunung Kinabalu it is! At the western end of the Sandakan to Renau walk. Location of a pretty sad event in Digger history.

For some reason the clue made me think "Pyramid Falls" or "Triangle Falls" but NZ doesn't have either AFAIK. So thinking laterally I came up with Bridal Veil Falls.
In this case that would be part of the Humboldt Mountains behind. Are you on Routeburn Road eggs?

Not much luck so far. I'm inclined to think you may be somewhere on the Tour Mont Blanc, and that could be the Matterhorn in the far distance.
So possibly facing east-ish. Or I could be completely wrong, again.

After posting I did a search and I had actually posted this before.
Yes to Tour Mt Blanc - Yes to Matterhorn.
Good enough to get you the next post.

Very generous eggs. I actually searched this forum and came up with nothing.
Search results often seem strange on here, presumably something unique to the software that I have never mastered.

From my archives, another old scanned photo from the UK.

I think this could be in Gwynedd, Wales. Looks like slate in the background hills so if I had to guess further I think I would say Ffestiniog or Blaenau or in the vicinity of the Ffestiniog railway. Some thing in the picture is fairlie obvious, doubly so really.

Steam train jokes aside :), you are on the money Greg. This is Blaenau Ffestiniog in Gwynned, North Wales.
We took a ride on the narrow gauge train pulling into the station. Some fantastic scenery in the region.
Wales is an unusual place to travel when people start conversing in native Welsh.

I'm just curious what the name is on the station sign; it doesn't look like "Blaenau Ffestiniog". I had somehow convinced myself that the first word on the sign was "Glen" :(

Sorry ribuck I have no idea and I can't make out a single letter of the alphabet on it, even with a magnifying glass and a strong light. I'm inclined to think it may actually be some sort of instruction to train crews - "No shunting" or something like that. It was taken in 1992 or 1993 and is the only still photo I have of that spot (long story). I do have a lot of VHS film from that trip that I need to digitise which likely has more coverage if you are patient enough until I get around to that. I tried googling but it seems no one takes photos of that profile. There are Blaenau Ffestiniog station name signs at the other end of the platform, on the main line platform opposite, and on entering the station from the overhead bridge.

I did find this which suggests that the sign may have sat on top of the now lonely post shown, although it's hard to tell from my photo:

Ribuck, I suspect the sign says Glen Conwy, it is probably directing passengers to the appropriate platform for the Conwy line, there's a junction for this line at Ffestinoig.

You are a fortunate man to have taken a ride on the Ffestiniog railway John, I have long wanted to go there. I have to confess to not having the slightest idea of the pictured location until I spotted the blurry image of the Fairlie double loco. Was its placement meant to be a subtle clue?

Thanks johnw and GregG for your comments on the sign.
Now that I know that this is Blaenau Ffestiniog station, I was able to find the following image which confirms that the sign says ... Blaenau Ffestiniog!

Here's the next one, staying in the same general part of the world. I'm looking for the name of the ridge in the foreground and the feature it leads to, but no points for telling me the date on which I was there!
