Mt Lyell

Postby naturelover » Tue 26 May, 2015 5:10 pm

Has anyone any information on climbing Mt Lyell? Every time I go to that area it yells to me to come on up and see the view. I tried to cross the stream below at one point but the soggy, marshy ground seemed to extend forever and I didn't feel like a long wade in freezing weather. If you have a jpeg version of your route I'd love to see it - or description of what you did, I'd love to read it. Ta

It might be private property? It would be worth contacting CMT first to find out if there are any issues with you being there.

No. Entry from the main road is not their property. I climbed Sedgwick yesterday and talked to them, and they said there was no problem with climbing (from that side, anyway). There is an artist in town who goes up regularly, they said.

No.Not all good. I still don't know a good place to get across that water. An artist is not going to wade 100s metres through marshy junk to get up a mountain to paint. There must be a nice crossing point.

The "game" is sometimes a source of some info.

Hm. There were floods everywhere the day I looked (last year - I opted for Owen instead), but behind the cafe was where I tried and the water was more than uninviting. There was so much water that day I couldn't even get a photo of Nelsons Falls, so maybe I just tried on the wrong day. I'll PM NNW.

Just park at Cemetery Creek and head straight up the obvious spur. 2-3hrs return. Nice to see some regrowth but it's still pretty ugly.

Just pick a spot and walk up. Back down the road from the Cafe near a little the bridge on the Lyell.
have a look on Google Earth - satellite maps. I think the way is fairly clear.
Looks horrible and scrubby around the cafe.

The creek was a non-event, I think I barely got my feet wet.
You must of just picked the wrong day.

I think so Azza. Every creek was flowing like a major river, and the Nelson Falls were booming so furiously you couldn't get a photo of them :(

Yep, Cemetery Creek is the go. The spur up behind that is nice and open. Great walking.

Somewhere that isn't the west coast of Tasmania.

Go down the drain from the highway to the creek (opposite the cemetery) then only about 50m of easy tall scrub and then you're in the open and the way is obvious: follow the ridge line to the saddle and turn left up to the summit. Main thing is selecting a day when the creek is low - take gumboots or cross barefoot. Could be ankle deep or thigh deep depending on quantity of rain and how recent it was.
