New daypack size/recommendations

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

New daypack size/recommendations

Postby farkewie » Mon 29 Jun, 2020 7:45 pm

Hi all,

Another pack question.

This time I am looking for a new daypack. I've only every had a small 16l and used my 42l for everything else.

I'm after something to suit most day walks. Often off track, scrambling and scrub bashing.

Main things I want to carry are.

3l bladder
Hard shell
Soft shell
Food
Jetboil.
Normal phone, small first aid kit
etc.
This list is probably the most I'd every carry all at the same time.

On the rare occasion, being able to strap 30m of 8mm to it would be a bonus.

So two questions.
1. What size pack would people recommend?
2. Any particular packs you would recommend to look at?

If you want something that's pretty easy to get hold of the Osprey Tallon 22 is good. A little over featured but bits can be removed. They make a 33l one as well.

I like my Gregory Nano 16 because it is simple and comfortable. Not sure you would get all that and a Jetboil in a 16 though. There 18 and 20 may work better.

Hmmm Winter / winter snow / rest of the year?
Winter snow 40 litres is my day pack size, rest of the time that's what I also use because it's what I have, although I own others I prefer the fit and comfort of the bigger bag.
Sometimes I do carry the CamelBack MULE but not often, put a XXL raincoat in that and there's not much room for anything else
Ve are too soon old und too late schmart

Sorry, I'm talking non snow. I'll use my 45 for that. I'd like something more compact for my day hikes though.

I did see a post on Instagram from wilderness threadworks. Looks like he has a pretty nice looking ul pack in the works. 23l main compartment, roll top, mesh back and side pockets.

I've been using a Black Diamond Bullet 16 for years but it was just too small so I recently bought a Gossamer Gear Minimalist 24, which I really like.

Perfect size. Very light. Comfortable. Exactly what I was looking for.

I reckon I could easily use it for overnighters with my ultralight setup, which isn't really what I bought it for but is an added bonus.
