TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Cobblers who resole approach shoes

Postby gbagua » Tue 14 Jan, 2020 3:28 pm

Hello,

I got a pair of La Sportiva TX4s and was wondering if anyone knows a cobbler in Australia who is able to resole this particular shoe.

Thanks in advance :)

I believe there is someone in Hornsby, Sydney who can replace the Vibram sole. Ring Mountain Equipment and they'll be able to tell you. The Chatswood store.

Amazing approach shoe but that's the price you pay for grip.

Interested to know how many kms you got out of them before needing a sole replacement?

I'd be interested too. I usually destroy a pair of approach shoes every year. They are not cheap.

Hey, many thanks. I'll give them a call and will report here in the end.

Yes they are that good that I use them for climbing too! Up to medium grades then switch to climbing shoes. Reason why I need to resole them after only 4 months of use. 3 times per week approx. So comfy they are that I walk with them, climb with them and back to the car with them too. Hate climbing shoes after finding out what TX4s are really like. Love them! :)

I'll be happy too if anyone else knows of a cobbler who has access to Vibram dot rubber (TX4 uses megagrip):

Gave Mountain Equipment a call, they referred me to that cobbler in Hornsby but the guy doesn't use either "MegaGrip" or "Dot Rubbers;" he charges $135 for a full resole. Too expensive.

Anyone tried contacting Big John's Retreads in Blackheath? He has resoled tens of thousands of rock shoes and has done approach shoes in the past

Bit late to the party, but Scotty Dog should be able to do them. I've had a quote for resoling some 5.10's with dot rubber before. http://www.scottydog.com.au/

Yes Scotty Dog resoles will replace the old rubber with a 5.10 Stealth C4 dotty.

He has now relocated to Stanthorpe (QLD):

Price per pair of approach shoes:

$90 plus $12 for return postage
$102.00 total

Hope this is all helpful.

I'd also recommend Big John in Blackheath. I don't think there's a resoler in the country with more experience. Climbing shoes are his bread and butter, but approach shoes are easy. Very reasonable prices, fast and reliable.

How about trail runners?

Just came across this photo of a pair of La Spo Ultra Raptor by a cobbler based in the US, Greater Tahoe Gripworks.

Pretty impressive!!

Climbing Resoles in Canberra also does approach shoes. You just have to decide if the uppers are worth the resole. https://climbingresoles.com.au/about-us/

Cool. Noted in case I go ahead when the need arises. Obviously otherwise it's just better buying a new pair of runners.
