What do you want in Santas sleigh this year?

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Whats on your wishlist?

For me..

1. MLD solo mid in DCF. Love my gatewood but silnylon sag on wet and windy mountain mornings is annoying. or maybe the XL or duomid. still deciding.

2. Garmin Fenix 6 Pro solar. Awesome but currently way... way.. out of my price range.

3. Cyber truck... .. its starting to grow on me..

Real worldwide action on climate change. Honesty and decency in politics.
But I'd settle for good walking weather for a couple of weeks.

Good walking weather? Which of the three bears are you?

I'll trump it .. good walking weather when I go for a walk. It is rubbish to have good walking weather and I cannot go.

Presently raining here .. that will stop the weeds dying ... rats .. passing storm gone, is 45 seconds of rain enough?

----------------------
Realistically? A smaller backpack I think will be good... may have to settle for a exos 38 (ventilated back, walking pole stowage, accessible water bottle stowage, light).

Still not quite enough range (it does about 400km on a full charge), although it's getting there.

You can get more range if you also buy the solar charging kit. But of course, that extra range would be dependent on getting your wish for good weather. :-)

PS. That thing is as ugly as it gets!

Garmin InReach Explorer +.

Bought today as an early 40th birthday present / Christmas present to myself. I got Paddy Pallin to price-match the Anaconda sale deal at $559.

"I want it, I got it." (to quote Ariana Grande)

I'm actually so happy with the rest of my hiking set-up that there's nothing else I currently want, which is saying something.

So looking forward to my upcoming trip to Wilson's Prom to enjoy it all. Well and the scenery of course. Wink.

I already ordered my Pacer-poles (carbon fiber dual lock) and they should be here in a couple of weeks.

My Dan Durston X-mid 1p tent arrived a few days ago. And I bought a new down jacket recently.

Not sure if I need anything else...

Possibly one of these:

https://seekoutside.com/silex-ultralight/

It looks pretty big, I think I could make a serviceable "nest" and have something close to my perfect tent.

Overall I'm pretty happy with my current kit though. I'd be happy with good health and good company, more so than a fancy tarp.

More annual leave to go walking. Already get 5 weeks but 52 would be better.

I’d like to know what the best fabric is for making another quilt....I’d like a decent DWR outer, and a light weight fabric. My last MYO quilts have been fine in terms of fabric weight, but just a bit too “absorbent” for any external H20, or resistant to internal H20 evaporation, so the outer ends up damp. Pertex sounded good. Not sure what the nearest equivalent and available is, or whether there is anything better.

For what it's worth, my Katabatic gear quilt (4ish years old now) has a quantum pertex outer and it's great, it's a little crinkly sounding, but not a problem IMHO. It beats the pants off whatever my Nemo bag is made of...

Cold weather and a week off.

Or a zpacks duplex and a full roll of green 1.43oz DCF.

Realistic haul will be a hole in my credit card and a sore liver

Clothing to fit a old fat walker, or my 20 year old body back! New tent, done. hiking poles and lightweight sleeping pad, brilliant. USB and solar charged collapsible lantern, unbelievable. Australian made pack adjusted and extended to fit me, tick. Quilt, large and extra wide, yup thanks to EE. But any clothing even vaguely suitable or technical to fit a returned to life old fat but fit walker, nope. "No demand" or "niche market" or "We had 2 only ordered and both have sold" etc. Come on, there must be a huge (see what I did there) market for newly retirees who need generous fit bush walking clothing.

Warin, an Exped lightning 45L is a comfy partial framed pack at 1.08kg if you can handle no lid. I paid $260, a couple of years ago, added some bungee on the shoulder strap and a toy carabiner on a bottom corner loop to carry walking poles ala-osprey.

On my santa list: stop gear 'upgrading' (shopping)!

Rain, to fall from FNQ to South-West Cape in Tassie, say 50 mm a day for a few weeks, easing off to 20 mm a day.
The Tasmanian government to banish the Halls Island idea to the outer darkness
The Victorian government to banish the Falls-Hotham fiasco to the outer darkness.
Federal action on the climate emergency and bushfires.

Tassie east coast needs it more. And it needs to start slow and easy so it soaks in and softens the ground, so more can be absorbed rather than just running off.

Thanks, I had not thought of that. Maybe with a gentle start seeds would germinate, increasing soil cover. My 50 mm was to put out the fires.

Free time to go for a walk would be nice. Failing that, I’m with whoever said real action on climate change. Ideally both.
