Wireless extenders

Thu 02 Jul, 2020 3:31 pm

Just trying to watch some 4K on the new telly (wireless) and the signal keeps dropping from 4K. The router is a fair way away.
Has anybody had any luck with powered extenders? I believe they are mains powered.
Looking for something very small and cheap that has worked for them.
I know a blue cord would be better and moving the router closer too-but not an option for me.
Keithy?

I'm no expert!
But. I've tried to no real advantage and have still got them. Happy to give to new home.

However I've had for several years those Ethernet over power adapters and they have got me out of trouble.
Assume they still available. Um. Yes. How much do you want to pay
Just plug one into a power plug near your router, another next to your TV and use your blue cord to plug in the telly.

Before you look at spending money it may be worth trying to change the wireless channel on the router.
That worked for my Windows 10 desktop PC that I'm typing this on, which is located about 20 metres from the router. Only occasional drop outs now and performance is much better.
I had resisted as long as possible but finally had to convert to NBN late last year, then had ongoing wi-fi connection problems before recently stumbling on the channel change fix.
Frustratingly we still have problems with the (new) smart TV on some platforms, even though it's right next to the router and I've directly connected it with a short CAT6 ethernet cable.
Free-to-air internet platforms for SBS, Nine, and TEN all suffer frequent buffering issues but Netflix has worked perfectly from day one. And strangely ABC i-View has no issues either.

How far is it from your router and what router do you have?

15 odd metres but not in a straight line -and the Telstra one. I can get 1440 res with a weak wireless signal quite easily.

Ta John and Taswegian. Really remarkable that even with a very weak wireless signal this new UHD Samsung will get 1440 res easily-no buffering as well as all the free stuff.
4K is nice but the 1440 is a big step up from 1080 and may have to do. It is still pretty nice, no doubt about it.

I think a wired connection wifi extender or a powerline wifi extender should work. Assuming you have a fast enough speed for 4k at the initial router point?

Some articles which offers some explanation on options.

Probably best to use a store you can return the product for exchange or refund. That way you can try a cabled extender and power line extender to see which offers the best speed.

Try and gwt same brand as your router if possible. Will make setup a bit easier.

Woops damn, sorry.
I missed your response. I turn off the 'notify' thingy at the bottom.
Thanks for the ideas.
I think the return is the way to go, but I have almost continuously been getting the 1440-and I can't discern much of a diff. (it's clearly there if I go back and fourth) so I gave up a bit. If I go back to it, which I may if it plays up, I'll use those ideas and do that reading.

Hey Johno
Just idly stuffing around with the telly (still easily getting 1440 mostly) and the Telstra gateway acesss pops up so I think I'll try and change the channel-did it a while back but not for yonks-go to C4 and bingo, bango goes UP from about 50 to 296-streaming the 4K like a dream.
Don't know if it will last, may do as there are no remote learning students around, but it is the middle of the day.
Tonight between 7 and 10 will tell!
Cheers

Good news Lamont, I hope the performance level continues. Fingers crossed I now seem to have sorted out most of our NBN issues.
